COLOMBO (News 1st); A Sri Lankan citizen who was allegedly held captive in a Myanmar area controlled by a terrorist group and forced to participate in cyber crimes has been dropped near the Sri Lankan embassy in Myanmar.
Ambassador Janaka Bandara confirmed the young man being dropped off near the Sri Lankan mission, and announced his imminent return to Sri Lanka later today.
According to Bandara, the victim entered Myanmar on a tourist visa last November and was subsequently detained in an office used for cybercrime activities within the Myawaddi area, under the control of an unnamed terrorist group.
It's crucial to note that he is not among the previously reported 56 Sri Lankans held in a separate location within Myanmar. However, he was reportedly held somewhere closeby.
While the individual claims he wasn't physically harmed, his visa overstayed the permitted 14 days.
Consequently, he will was temporarily housed at the Sri Lankan ambassador's residence before being repatriated to the island today.
