COLOMBO (News 1st) - Saudi Arabia shocked the football world Tuesday when they defeated heavily favoured two-time champions Argentina 2-1 in a Group C match at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Lionel Messi opened scoring for Argentina when he converted a penalty in the 10th minute of the game.
Argentina almost made it 2-0 in the 27th minute. However, an attacking player was found offside and the goal by Lautaro Martines was disallowed.
At half-time Argentina led 1-0.
The Saudis came back strong in the second half and equalized with an Saleh Alshehri goal in the 48th minute.
Salem Aldawsari then scored in the 53rd minute to take the lead in the game and the Saudis held on for the victory.
