COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Cabinet has granted approval to a proposal seeking to extend the retirement age of doctors by one year.
Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Bandula Gunawardena stated that a previous decision was reached with regard to the retirement age of all public servants, which required them to retire when they reached 60 years of age.
However, a decision has been taken to extend the retirement age of doctors by one year in the view of the adverse effects which may befall the health sector, the Minister said while speaking at the Cabinet press briefing.
Minister Gunawardena said that the decision was arrived after extensive discussions of additional challenges to be faced in achieving the expected placements in the next two months through the specialist transfer process, and therefore the committee appointed to review the process had arrived at several recommendations;
Accordingly,
- Doctors who have completed 63 years of age will retire on 31st December
- Doctors who have completed 62 years at present will retire on completion of 63 years.
- Doctors who have completed 61 years will retire on completion of 62 years.
- Doctors who have completed 60 years will retire on completion of 61 years.
- Those who have completed 59 by now will retire on completion of 60 years.
It has been recommended that the period of retirement of doctors should end on 2023 December 31st, and after that, they will be allowed to retire by the age 60.
