COLOMBO (News 1st); In the face of the current economic crisis, the people should not be lied to, while political figures should extend support without party prejudices, says the CBSL Governor, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Mahinda Siriwardena and other senior officials of the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance appeared before the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) at the Parliament.
Chairman of the Committee, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa stated that steps were taken to summon the Governor and other officials of the Central Bank to inquire into the current economic crisis in the country and possible solutions.
Chairman Anura Priyadarshana Yapa also suggested for a report to be compiled with the policy decisions to be taken down the road in order to construct a sable economy, and to present the relevant report to the Parliament as well.
The Governor stated that USD 600 million which the country is due to receive will be utilized to import essentials, and added that while the last date of preliminary discussions with the IMF is today (24), the coming months will remain challenging due to the need to restructure debt.
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors of the Bank of Ceylon have also been summoned before the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises, to discuss issues including the Bank of Ceylon's annual performance.
