COLOMBO (News 1st); Countries beaten and battered worse by COVID-19 have not had an economic tsunami as much as Sri Lanka had, says Samagi Jana Balawega MP Eran Wickremaratne.

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo on Sunday (26), the MP expressed his views regarding the economic crisis, pointing out that Sri Lanka has set several economic records in history with its recent steps and statistics.

The MP went onto cite several Government reports, stating that inflation has increased by 3.2% from 2014 to 2019, during a period of five years, however it has noted an increase of 10.5% from 2019 until 2021, within a period less than two years.

Moreover, MP Wickremaratne mentioned that in the last few months alone, people have sold more than six kilos of gold.

The MP went onto say that there are countries which have fared worse with COVID-19, however, such an economic tsunami has not come to those countries, while their commodity prices have not increased like Sri Lanka has.

"We have been printing money for the last two years alone. No other country in the world has printed money like this. We have printed 1.5 trillion. Therefore, the public can imagine the speed at which commodity prices are rising," he added.
