COLOMBO (News 1st); Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, has issued a circular to establish Public Safety Committees across the country.
This initiative aims to cover all Grama Niladhari divisions, with a total of 14,022 committees to be formed.
The primary objectives of these committees include strengthening police-community relations, ensuring peace and security, combating crime and drug threats, and promoting religious harmony.
Each committee will include a police officer and will be supported by retired public servants, retired police and military officers, as well as youth members. The tenure for committee members will be three years.
The progress of these committees will be reviewed monthly by the Officer-in-Charge of the respective police stations. Additionally, district-level reviews will be conducted bi-monthly by the Assistant Superintendent of Police.
