COLOMBO (News 1st):The Consumer Affairs Authority Bill (Amended) was passed in Parliament on Wednesday (22).
The bill seeks to increase the fines imposed on traders who do not sell goods at the control price after the Consumer Affairs Authority issued a gazette notification highlighting the maximum retail price for certain goods.
The Extraordinary Gazette Notification relevant to this Bill was issued on 19th August 2021.
Accordingly, the fines imposed on individual businesses and all businesses registered as institutions or companies will be revised.
Moreover, after a trial before a magistrate, convicted felons can be fined or imprisoned, or both considering the offense.
