SORABORA WEWA AT THE BRINK OF DESTRUCTION

COLOMBO (News 1st): The irrigation technology of our ancestors has been recognized as a world irrigation heritage. The Sorabora wewa said to be built by the giant Bulatha is also a part of our irrigation heritage. However despite the pride, we boast of our past heritage, the negligence of officials have brought this vital part of our irrigation heritage to the brink of destruction. The historic Sorabora Wewa is covered with water hyacinth The villagers allege that the tourist boat industry has it a halt due to this issue. The Sorabora Wewa in Mahiyanganaya is endangered due to the spreading of water hyacinth. More than 160 fishermen who travel on the Sorabora Wewa are left helpless due to this issue. The residents urged the authorities to involve in this matter as fast as possible and provide them with solutions.
