Colombo (News 1st); Environmentalists allege the road to Lankagama is constructed with the objective of building the necessary infrastructure required for the Gin Nilwala Diversion Project.
Environmentalist Sajeewa Chamikara speaking to reporters called on authorities not to operate based on the requirements of Chinese companies. "It is impossible to regrow a natural forest, especially one which is similar to the Sinharaja Rainforest," he said. Noting that Sinharaja is a world heritage site, the environmentalist said failing to protect such a site would bring disrepute to the country as a whole. Environmentalist Sajeewa Chamikara was commenting on the recent statement made by Minister Chamal Rajapaksa that the government has planned on a project to construct two irrigation tanks inside the Sinharaja Rainforest to provide clean water to Hambantota in the far south.
