Colombo (News 1st); Ex-DIG Vaas Gunawardena and his wife Shayamali Priyadarshani Perera were acquitted and released from a case filed against them with regard to a land.
The order was made by Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabandige on Monday (15). A case was filed against the duo under several indictments including the take-over of a land spanning one and a half acres in Maharagama, which is valued in the millions, by forging documents. Counsel Jaliya Samarasinghe appearing for the accused produced preliminary objections before the indictments were read out, citing that the transaction had taken place in 1996 and the Attorney General had filed the case exceeding the period in which a case can be filed. When the preliminary objections were filed, the Attorney General's Department withdrew the indictment paper. Accordingly, Ex-DIG Vaas Gunawardena and his wife Shayamali Priyadarshani Perera were acquitted and released from the case.
