COLOMBO (News1st): The All Ceylon General Ports Workers Union has warned that the failure of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to abide by proper security and health protocols concerning shipping operations will increase the risk of COVID-19 entering the country.
In a letter to Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva who heads the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, the union pointed out that workers directly and indirectly involved in shipping operations are not carrying out their duties in a secure manner.
The union added that allowing local and foreign crew members to leave the vessel and the lack of a proper internal mechanism to address these matters, has aggravated this issue.
