Boossa Prisoners call off hunger strike as demands were not met

Colombo (News 1st); The five-day hunger strike launched by incarcerated inmates at the Boossa High-Security Prison was called off on Monday (14). 

Commissioner (Administration) of the Department of Prisons Chandana Ekanayake speaking to News 1st said the demands of the inmates were not granted. 

46 notorious drug traffickers and members of organized crime syndicates were engaged in the hunger strike at the Boossa High-Security Zone citing 04 separate demands, said Chandana Ekanayake.  

He said on day one five inmates stepped away from the hunger strike, on day two 10 others stepped away from the hunger strike, and on day three 25 others stepped away from the hunger strike. 

He added by Monday afternoon all the remaining inmates stepped away from the hunger strike, calling off their 04-day action. 

None of their demands were met, said the Prisons Commissioner adding all their demands were unreasonable. On the 10th of September, inmates incarcerated at the ‘Boossa High-Security Prison’ commenced a hunger strike demanding the existing security measures at the prison premises be eased as well as to withdraw from conducting searches on visitors to the Prison and around the ‘Boossa High-Security Prison’.
