Colombo (News 1st); The Attorney Generals Department on Tuesday (18) announced it concluded 12,968 cases of Child Abuse over the last 18 months.

State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General speaking to News 1st said these cases relate to those forwarded to the Attorney General's Department for advice by Sri Lanka Police from January 2019 to July 2020.

Further, indictments were forwarded to the High Courts against suspects with regard to 6149 cases.

4372 suspects have been released and Sri Lanka Police was advised to file legal action with the Magistrate's Court with respect to 2447 cases.

State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the AGs Department had managed to reduce the backlog to 851 pending cases in the Child Protection Unit, and this is the first time in the history of the unit where such a low number of pending cases exist.
