Colombo (News 1st); The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over the investigation over the discovery of 12 Assault Rifles from a business establishment in Pitipana Homagama.
The Police Special Task Force said 19 Assault Rifles had been placed at the location, however, only 12 were discovered.
Detectives are following multiple leads to determine what happened to the missing 07 Assault Rifles.
A source from the Criminal Investigations Department said statements are to be recorded from incarcerated underworld gangsters "Kosgoda Tharaka" and "Gagana" on the discovery of these weapons.
On Monday, 12 Assault Rifles were discovered from inside an electrical equipment distribution centre in Pitipana, Homgama by the Police Special Task Force.
11 T-56 Assault Rifles and 01 T-81 Assault Rifle, were discovered in the raid.
One person was arrested along with the weapons, and Sri Lanka Police said he is a member of an organized criminal gang and goes by the name “Potta Kapila” – a resident from the same area.
Investigations revealed the suspect “Potta Kapila” and incarcerated criminal “Gagana” maintained close contact.
Detectives added, “Potta Kapila” is also the person who provided a get-away car to the criminals responsible for robbing a jewelry store in Matara in 2018, which resulted in the death of a police officer following a shoot-out between the criminals and Police.
