Police uncovered a drug racket that was operating from within the Negombo prison, leading to an arrest of three suspects including an Air Force Sergeant from the Katunayake Air Force Camp on Saturday(20).
The arrests were made following a tip-off received by the Police Western Province Intelligence Unit.
The Air Force Sergeant was arrested along with 100 grams of heroin and 400 grams of Kerala Cannabis or KG in his possession at the time of the arrest in Seeduwa.
Interrogation of the suspect led to the arrests of the wife and brother of an inmate currently serving time at the Negombo Prison, who had operated the drug operation from within prison walls.
The duo were arrested for the possession of a combined weight of 455 kilograms of Kerala Ganja.
According to the Police, they were said to be running the drug operation on instructions given by the prison inmate.
Investigations revealed the suspects serve as mules to deliver the drugs to various individuals based on the instructions of the Negombo Prison Inmate and the illegal earnings are deposited to the account of the Prison Inmate's wife.
