Colombo (News 1st) - The introduction of an electronic system for the registration of lands took place in Colombo today. The event took place under the patronage of State Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs Mahinda Samarasinghe.
The project is being implemented by the Land Registry Office and the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka. The ownership of any land across the country can be confirmed through this system.
While officials of the Land Registry Office were explaining the new systems that have been put in place State Minister Samarasinghe interrupted and told the members of the media that had gathered that they would receive a hard copy of the presentation that was being made. Interestingly the official was explaining the factors that must be present in order to make it easier for foreign businessmen to come and begin businesses in the country before she was cut off.
The controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation Sri Lanka Compact is an agreement for a grant of 480 million US dollars to simplify processes and regulations surrounding lands in this country and to develop the transport system. The interim report of the committee appointed by the current government to examine the MCC Sri Lanka Compact was submitted to the President on the 17th of this month.
Speaking last year on the intentions of the Sri Lanka Compact, MCC's Sri Lanka Resident Country Director, Jenner Edelman noted that $350mn is to be allocated to improve urban and rural transportation infrastructure facilities.
JVP Politburo member Wasantha Samarasinghe speaking on the recent developments noted that the Government is failing to fulfill any of the promises they made. While stating that the bond scam thieves are still out in the open, Samarasinghe reminded that the current administration promised to abolish the MCC agreement. Samarasinghe questioned where the Government is getting the money to develop roads and amend land regulations if the MCC is not being implemented.
Wasantha Samarasinghe accused the Government of playing a double game of cozying up to the United States while making a ruckus about the MCC and issues such as the travel ban on Army Commander Shavendra Silva.
