Colombo (News 1st): For the second time this year, the Working Committee of the United National Party met to take decisions on contesting the General Election expected to take place between March and April.
Following Monday's meeting, an ardent supporter of Sajith Premadasa, Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha De Silva speaking at the gates to Sirikotha said Sajith Premadasa left the Working Committee meeting after telling Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP Working Committee to lead the party at the General Elections unless Wickremesinghe is willing to let Premadasa actually lead the new political movement without trying to buckle it.
De Silva expressed his frustrations on twitter following this meeting.
According to Dr. Harsha De Silva, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa showed his utmost disappointment to the Working Committee of the United National Party on the unjust treatment he is facing.
Sajith Premadasa had said, there is no point in him being the Opposition Leader and the Prime Minister Candidate if the UNP Working Committee led by Ranil Wickremesinghe will be making decisions for the General Election citing it is the UNP which would be contesting.
Harsha De Silva expressing his disappointment went on to note the conduct of the UNP Working Committee will never allow them be strong to contest the election.
On 5th December 2019, Sajith Premadasa was nominated as the leader of the opposition, and was officially named by the speaker on January 3rd, 2020.
However, Ranil Wickremesinghe continues to remain as the Leader of the United National Party despite continuous calls from many UNPers from inside and outside of Sirikotha to step down & hand over the reigns to Premadasa.
