Commission to probe political revenge incidents

President appoints commission to investigate incidents of political revenge

Colombo (News 1st): President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate incidents of political revenge conducted through the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division and the Bribery Commission between the 8th of January 2015 and the 16th of November 2019. Retired Supreme Court Justice Upali Abeyaratne has been appointed as the Chairman of the commission. The other members of the commission include retired Court of Appeal Justice Daya Chandrasiri Jayathilake and retired Inspector of Police Chandra Fernando. The commission is tasked with looking into improper use of power, and influences by third parties on the Bribery Commission, the police financial crimes investigation division or the Police special investigations units. The extraordinary gazette notification bearing the signature of the Secretary to President P.B. Jayasundara states that a report or an interim report should be submitted within 6 months.
