COLOMBO(News 1st) - The Sri Lanka Police launched an island-wide environment protection campaign with the reestablishment of the Police Environmental Protection Division. The event was held at the Independence square premises. Several officers including, Police spokesperson SSP Ruwan Gunasekara attended the event. Cleaning programs were held in Galle Face Green and Pettah in line with the event. SSP Ruwan Gunasekara, Police Media Spokesperson: "It is necessary to point out that on the advice of His Excellency the President and under the guidance of the Secretary of Defence this massive operation to protect the environment was launched. We started restructuring the environmental division and as well as the Environment Unit of the Sri Lanka Police. Accordingly, steps were taken to appoint a new DIG in charge of the Environment unit and a new Director in charge of the Environmental Division. The Environmental Units have been reestablished in all police stations in the country. We will continue to deploy officers of these environmental units and divisions on every road. Another important aspect is reducing accidents to create a safer country. From today we will also commence a workshop for four selected groups namely,three-wheelers, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The IGP summoned SSPs and SPs from 44 police divisions on the island last night and gave them special instructions on protecting the environment to create a safer country while minimizing accidents." Acting IGP C.D Wickremaratne presided over an event held at the Police Fingerprint Division. He noted that their department is responsible for maintaining discipline in the country. He added that people of the country need to feel that there is discipline in the country. "You'll have been given this uniform to work without fear. The public expects it. We can't always be a 3rd world country. We must say that Sri Lanka is a developed country in the 3rd world. We must build the law and order as well as discipline. All these aspects are in the Police."
