"Lower number of women in parliament is a serious issue" - Speaker Karu Jayasuriya

COLOMBO (News 1st):- The "Professional and Career Women Awards" 2019 was held in Colombo last evening (September 6). It was organized by Women in Management and International Finance Corporation. ‘The Professional & Career Women Awards’ celebrates the achievements of remarkable women who inspire those around them, either through media, through their astounding achievements in their careers, businesses or everyday lives. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, several ministers, MPs, business leaders, and other dignitaries attended this event. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya speaking at the event said that there are a very few women in parliament which is a serious issue for the country. He further says that it will be of advantage to have more women in parliament since he would then have better behaviour and contribution. Explaining the reasons for the less number of women representation in parliament, he said that it could be due to the culture in the country. However, the speaker once again added that this current low numbers should be increased which is bound to increase the quality of the parliament.
