Colombo (News 1st): The 16th match of the World Cup which was due to be played between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain.
For the second day running, the 2019 World Cup witnessed a no-result that forced Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to walk away with one point each. This is the fifth World Cup being staged in England, and incredibly this one has already witnessed two cancellations without a toss, the most-ever in a single edition.
Sri Lanka, who already endured a washout against Pakistan, now have two points courtesy rain, which effectively amounts to a second win. For Bangladesh, the situation is dire as they are in the bottom half of the points table with just a solitary win in four outings.
It is being reported that Lasith Malinga is set to fly back home for the funeral of his mother-in-law. He is, however, likely to return in time for Sri Lanka's next clash against Australia on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket, issuing statement says it strenuously deny the malicious and damaging allegations currently flooding Social and Digital Media claiming that “Sri Lanka Cricket will be bankrupt in 9 months”. SLC says The contents of these reports/articles which are based on an article published by an Indian gossip website with its own agenda, are untrue, unfounded, malicious, and aimed at damaging the reputation of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The release adds SLC intends to seek legal redress with regard to these malicious publications.
