Colombo (News 1st) - Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya states that the commission is prepared for parliamentary elections.
Accepting of nominations for the parliamentary election is set to begin on the 19th of November and go on till noon on the 26th of November. Accordingly, the new parliament will gather on the 17th of January 2019.
President Maithripala Sirisena issued a Gazette yesterday and dissolved the Parliament. According to the Gazette, section 33 part 2 subsection (d) of the constitution and section 62 subsection 2 combined with section 70 subsection 5 of the constitution states that the parliament was dissolved in accordance with executive powers vested in the president.
Mahinda Deshapriya, when questioned, stated that they have not made any statements regarding postponing of elections, or canceling elections and that all the proceedings will take place in the right way. He went on to state that the provincial council elections were expected and that a meeting was held regarding that on the 29th of October.
He then stated that the election's commission is to obtain the advice of the High Court regarding the case of the delimitation report of the provincial council elections and that they haven't deviated from it yet. He also stated that Rs. 4 to Rs. 5 billion will have to be incurred to hold an election adding that no date is certain for an election as of yet.
