Police Warn of Strict Action Against Substandard Number Plates

COLOMBO (News 1st) - DIG in charge of Traffic Management and Road Safety Division, W.P.J. Senadheera, says strict legal action will be taken against drivers using substandard number plates.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Police Media Division today, Senadheera emphasized that vehicle number plates must comply with gazetted standards. 

Accordingly, the front number plate should display black letters and digits on a white background, while the rear plate must have black letters and digits on a yellow background. 

He noted that the increasing use of colored and non-standard number plates has made it difficult for authorities to identify vehicles involved in accidents or criminal activities.

Senadheera further stated that individuals engaged in illegal activities often alter or replace number plates to evade detection.
