COLOMBO (News1st): Pavement hawking and street vending within the Kandy municipal limits have been banned effective from today.
Chandrasiri Wijenayake, The Mayor of Kandy, said that street vendors have already been informed of this decision.
Under this new directive, vending activities on pavements will be halted within both the limits of Kandy and Katugastota towns.
The Mayor explained that pavement hawking has a significant negative impact on the city’s aesthetics and causes great inconvenience to pedestrians using the sidewalks.
He further noted that these activities adversely affect the income of established shop owners in the municipal shopping complex areas, who regularly pay taxes and rates to the Municipal Council.
However, the Mayor added that an alternative location has been allocated for the displaced street vendors to carry out their business activities following the ban.
