COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has made a stunning leap in popularity among Indian holidaymakers, emerging as the third-most booked international destination for the 2025 holiday season.

This surge is confirmed by the latest figures from MakeMyTrip, India’s leading travel booking platform, based on reservations between December 20, 2025, and January 2026.

For years, Sri Lanka has been admired for its sun-kissed beaches, ancient temples, and lush landscapes, but 2025 marks a turning point.

The island nation now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with global tourism giants, surpassing expectations and redefining its position on India’s travel map.

Thailand continues to dominate as the top overseas destination for Indian tourists, followed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Yet Sri Lanka’s rise to third place is remarkable, given its previous absence from the top tier.

What’s driving this boom?

Proximity and Accessibility: With frequent flights from major Indian cities and short travel times of just 2–3 hours, Sri Lanka is an ideal quick getaway.

Cultural Connection: Shared traditions and historical ties resonate with Indian travelers, especially at landmarks like the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and Polonnaruwa’s ancient city.

Diverse Experiences: From Bentota’s beaches to Sigiriya’s rock fortress, and wildlife safaris in Yala and Udawalawe, Sri Lanka offers something for every traveler.

Affordability: A wide range of accommodations—from luxury resorts to budget homestays—makes Sri Lanka accessible to all.

This combination of scenic beauty, cultural depth, and affordability has transformed Sri Lanka into a holiday hotspot for Indian tourists, signaling a new era for the island’s tourism industry.
