55-Year-Old Gets Life In Prison For Heroin Possession

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Galle High Court today (31) sentenced a woman to life imprisonment after finding her guilty of possessing heroin.

Delivering the judgment, High Court Judge Poornima Paranagama ruled that the accused was guilty of possession of 9 grams and 8 milligrams of heroin, discovered during a police raid in Kaluwella, Galle, on May 9, 2014. 

The arrest was carried out by officers of the Galle Police Anti-Narcotics Division.

Following the arrest, the Attorney General filed an indictment before the Galle High Court on charges of heroin trafficking and possession.

After an extensive trial, the accused was acquitted of trafficking charges but convicted for possession.

The sentence was imposed on a 55-year-old resident of Hikkaduwa.
