COLOMBO (News 1st); Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, Sri Lanka's Inspector General of Police, has warned that individuals linked to organized drug trafficking and criminal networks are actively attempting to infiltrate Sri Lanka’s political landscape.
The Police Chief stated that some of these individuals have already entered politics and are now preparing to contest in future national elections.
“This is a matter that political parties must urgently address. They must decide whether to grant membership or candidacy to individuals with ties to organized crime and narcotics,” Weerasuriya said.
He emphasized that this issue transcends party lines and called for open dialogue and accountability across all political platforms.
According to the IGP, these criminal figures are using political legitimacy as a shield for illicit operations, attempting to mask their activities under the guise of public service.
“They wear white and commit dark deeds. Their goal is to use politics as a cover for drug trafficking and organized crime,” he added.
