COLOMBO (News 1st); The government has issued a firm warning against any disruptive actions in the electricity sector, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining an uninterrupted power supply and safeguarding the country’s fragile economic recovery.

Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa addressed concerns in a media briefing today, following rising tensions surrounding trade union actions within the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). He clarified that the decision to declare electricity an essential service was taken to protect national interests, not to suppress workers’ rights.

“At a time when the economy is just beginning to breathe again, the government cannot afford a strike that would destabilize progress and jeopardize hard-earned opportunities,” Dr. Jayatissa stated. “Ensuring continuous electricity supply is a core responsibility, and we will take all necessary steps to fulfill that duty.”

Responding to questions about potential future disruptions, the Minister reiterated the government’s readiness to act decisively.

“No form of sabotage will be tolerated. If such actions occur, the law will be enforced strictly,” he said. “The Electricity Board operates within the economy—not outside it. Restructuring is essential to ensure long-term sustainability.”

Dr. Jayatissa also highlighted concerns raised by investors and industrialists, who have expressed willingness to invest in Sri Lanka’s manufacturing sector but remain discouraged by high electricity costs.

“We are committed to providing maximum relief to consumers. Only by doing so can we unlock the full potential of economic growth,” he added.
