COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has called for patience as global trade dynamics continue to evolve, emphasizing that it is still too early to draw definitive conclusions about the long-term impact of recent international developments.

Speaking on the current state of global economic negotiations, Dr. Weerasinghe noted that while there is still uncertainty, recent signs suggest a gradual shift toward stability.

“There’s a 90-day pause (on US tariffs), and governments are now engaged in negotiations,” he said, referring to broader international trade discussions.

He highlighted recent moves by major economies such as the United States and the United Kingdom, which have announced new trade packages. “There was even some easing of tensions with China, with tariffs dropping from around 145% to 30%,” he added, describing the trend as a positive step.

Despite these developments, Dr. Weerasinghe cautioned that the final outcomes remain unclear. “We have to wait and see what the end game will be. There’s still uncertainty, but it’s less than before, and the direction appears more favorable,” he said.
