COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Purasankulam Police Station in Vavuniya has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 500,000.
The bribe was reportedly demanded in exchange for resolving a land dispute and ensuring the smooth use of the disputed property.
The suspect was apprehended at his office while receiving the money, according to the Commission.
In a separate case, a Unit Manager attached to the Mahaweli Authority has also been arrested on bribery charges, following a complaint lodged by a resident of the Welikanda area.
The complainant had received a 20-perch plot in the Athugala area under the Ranaviru Foundation housing scheme, but later requested an alternative plot, claiming the original land was a swamp.
The suspect allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 20,000 to process the request for a new plot.
The official in question is employed at the Senapura Divisional Management Office as the Unit Manager of the Sandunpitiya Unit.
