COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has launched a special investigation into the death of a schoolgirl in Kotahena.
Chairperson of NCPA, High Court Judge Preethi Inoka Ranasinghe, confirmed that reports have been requested from the Kotahena and Bambalapitiya police stations regarding the incident.
The NCPA also highlighted a disturbing trend of child abuse cases in schools going unreported due to concerns over the reputation of the institutions or fear of discouraging victims.
To address this, the Authority has issued directives to the Secretary to the Ministry of Education and all Provincial Education Directors, outlining immediate measures to be taken in cases of school-based abuse.
These include:
Immediate reporting of any abuse by school authorities via the 24-hour 1929 Child Support Service or directly to the NCPA.
Disciplinary action against accused principals or teachers, including barring them from working with children until investigations conclude.
Ensuring internal disciplinary probes do not further traumatize affected children.
Avoiding retaliatory actions against complainant children, such as removal from school or marginalization.
The Chairperson emphasized the importance of timely reporting of abuse to ensure justice and prevent cover-ups.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education says the teacher accused in connection with the Kotahena incident has been placed on compulsory leave.
The Ministry confirmed that the police 'B report' has been received, and a preliminary investigation is underway, with formal disciplinary action to follow.
