COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Police released further details regarding the shooting incident that occurred in Kotahena on April 12, 2024.
The incident began when police officers fired at a car that was fleeing after ignoring police orders to stop. It was later revealed that the car had been stolen by the suspect.
Late last night, a man arrived at Vasala Road, Kotahena, with his pregnant wife and mother in a car.
Police said that he had left the engine running while he went to purchase food from a nearby restaurant on Kotahena Street.
During this time, a suspect stole the car with the man's wife and mother still inside.
A team of officers from the Mattakkuliya Police Station, who were in the Kotahena area for an investigation, received information about the stolen car and immediately acted. They pursued the fleeing vehicle and signaled it to stop.
The suspect ignored the police orders and continued driving, prompting the officers to fire two shots from their service pistols.
The chase ended near the Bloemendhal Railway, where the police successfully intercepted the car.
The suspect fled on foot, leaving the two women unharmed inside the vehicle.
The police have confirmed that no harm came to the women during the incident.
The Kotahena Police are conducting further investigations to apprehend the suspect.
