COLOMBO (News 1st); Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dasanayake has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
This arrest took place over corruption charges that allegedly occured during his tenure as the Chief Minister of the Uva Province.
One charge involves obtaining 2.5 million rupees from two state banks for the Uva Provincial Council and then depositing those funds into Chamara Sampath Dasanayake's foundations account.
Another charge alleges that he personally received one million rupees from another state bank, which had been obtained for the Provincial Council, directly from the bank branch as the Chief Minister.
A further charge against him states that after being refused by a bank manager for funds he had requested from another state bank, the minister withdrew all fixed deposits of the Provincial Council causing a 23 million rupee loss to the government.
MP Chamara Sampath Dasanayake was summoned to the Bribery Commission around 9:30 AM today to provide a statement regarding these charges, and was subsequently arrested there.
