COLOMBO (News 1st); Badulla District Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dasanayake has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with corruption charges dating back to his tenure as Chief Minister of Uva Province.
Dasanayake was summoned to the Bribery Commission at approximately 9:30 AM today (27) to provide a statement regarding the allegations. Following his statement, he was taken into custody.
The charges against Dasanayake include the misappropriation of Rs. 2.5 million obtained from two state banks, which were allegedly transferred to his foundation's account.
Another charge involves the direct receipt of Rs. 1 million from a state bank, intended for the provincial council, which Dasanayake reportedly took personally from the bank branch.
The third charge accuses Dasanayake of causing a loss of Rs. 23 million to the government by withdrawing all fixed deposits maintained by the provincial council from a state bank after the bank manager refused to provide additional funds.
Dasanayake was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, where he was granted bail.
