COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Police Chief has said that he will always standby with the police officers who are dedicated to curb crime in the country.
Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and recognition of police officers dedicated to combating organized crime.
Speaking at an awards ceremony held in Colombo, Weerasooriya underscored the government's commitment to supporting these officers.
"We are committed to providing necessary protection and recognizing the service of officers who are dedicated to cracking down on organized crime," Weerasooriya stated.
The ceremony saw the distribution of over 24 million rupees in cash prizes and 25 commendations to 140 officers who have made significant contributions to crime resolution.
The Acting IGP highlighted that these awards are part of a broader effort to encourage and appreciate the hard work of police officers.
"We anticipate further encouraging our officers by organizing events to present awards and prizes," Weerasooriya added.
"Cash prizes are awarded following a comprehensive selection process. At the beginning of this year, the President announced measures to present cash prizes to police officers. Major raids carried out recently will be rewarded, and future major raids and arrests will also be recognized."
Weerasooriya also addressed the human resources shortage within the Sri Lanka Police, noting that the government has provided certain facilities to address these issues. "The necessary protection will be given to officers who dedicate themselves to cracking down on organized crime. At the same time, they will be rewarded. As the head of the police force, I will always stand by them. Our needs have been forwarded to the government from time to time, and the President and the Minister have responded positively to these requests."
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravi Seneviratne, and other officials.
