COLOMBO (News 1st); Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, underscored the interconnected nature of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, emphasizing that the security environment shaped today will impact future generations.
"The Indo-Pacific isn't just vital to our militaries; it's the engine of global prosperity," Admiral Paparo stated at the National Defence College on Thursday (20). "These waters carry over half of the world's trade, and the security environment that we shape today will determine the nation's future generations."
Admiral Paparo addressed the challenges posed by assertive behaviors of certain nations, which threaten regional stability and international norms, directly affecting freedom of navigation essential to commerce. He noted the increasing military cooperation among authoritarian nations, creating strategic challenges that demand immediate attention.
Highlighting the importance of strengthening democratic partnerships, Admiral Paparo pointed out the transnational threats such as terrorism, weapons proliferation, trafficking, and piracy that erode security and prosperity daily. He also emphasized the transformative impact of technological advancements like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and hypersonics on maritime security.
"Sri Lanka's key position at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean is strategically vital," Admiral Paparo remarked. "These shores border key sea lanes that connect the Pacific to the Indian Ocean to all seas. This geography allows Sri Lanka to influence maritime activities crucial to the entire Pacific."
Sri Lanka's strategic importance is further underscored by its role in international security efforts. The country has made significant contributions to peacekeeping missions, demonstrated professionalism in leadership roles such as Combined Task Force 154, and played a vital role in Operation Prosperity Guardian, protecting freedom of navigation. Admiral Paparo praised these efforts, highlighting Sri Lanka's values and capabilities that make it an essential partner.
"Our partnership is important for the entire region's future," Admiral Paparo concluded. "Together, we will ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific, and not just for ourselves, but for nations to come."
He also highlighted the need for collaborative efforts from all regional partners committed to peace and stability, reinforcing the importance of dialogue and cooperation, and ensuring a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
