COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Cabinet Spokesperson, disclosed that six teams from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are actively searching for fugitive police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon.
During today's (18) press conference to announce cabinet decisions, questions were raised regarding the non-arrest of Deshabandu Tennakoon, despite an open warrant issued against him.
He assured that the government is making efforts to arrest him and emphasized that the court's decision to suspend Tennakoon's duties as Inspector General of Police is not an interdiction.
Dr. Jayatissa reaffirmed the government's commitment to applying the law fairly and equally to everyone, highlighting the significance of the Court of Appeal's decision, which allows for legal action against those providing protection to Tennakoon.
When asked if the delay in arresting Tennakoon was due to some deal, Dr. Jayatissa denied such claims. He explained that several individuals, including Prasanna Ranaweera and Sewwandi (the suspect wanted in connection with the assassination of Ganemulla Sanjeewa), are also being searched for by police teams. He assured that the police are making maximum efforts in this regard and that the suspects cannot escape.
