COLOMBO (News 1st); Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stressed that punishing perpetrators and ensuring future societal safety through the use of state power or any other power should not undermine democracy or take lives.
Dr. Jayatissa made these remarks during today's Cabinet media briefing, discussing the future actions regarding the Batalanda Commission Report.
"As of yesterday morning, the Batalanda Commission Report was printed in three languages and tabled in Parliament. A committee will be appointed to further study the report and provide recommendations, which will happen in the coming days. The report will also be referred to the Attorney General. The recommendations from the committee appointed by the Attorney General and the President will be handed over to the judiciary for further legal action. It is the judiciary that will decide the next steps, not us. We will provide the necessary procedural framework for this process."
Dr. Jayatissa highlighted that the government's actions regarding the Batalanda incident aim to set a precedent for future societal safety.
