COLOMBO (News 1st); Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa visited the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital today (12) to assess the situation following the recent sexual assault on a trainee specialist doctor.

The Minister held discussions with the hospital's doctors, security forces, police, and municipal council officials to address the crisis.

Dr. Jayatissa emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating, "We consider this incident to be extremely serious. Such incidents should not happen in Sri Lanka. Our government's duty is to create a safe environment for all women, regardless of status."

The Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the hospital staff, including the lack of residential and transportation facilities. He praised the dedication of the doctors, nurses, and other staff members who continue to serve despite these difficulties.

Dr. Jayatissa urged the local community to support the hospital and called for the immediate removal of any places providing shelter to individuals engaging in illegal activities. He stressed the importance of implementing the discussed measures not only in Anuradhapura but also in other areas facing similar issues.

When asked about the ongoing strike by the Government Medical Officers' Association, Dr. Jayatissa stated, "Their main demand was the arrest of the suspect, which we have done. Therefore, it is up to them to decide whether to end the strike."
