Kuwait's Global Impact: 105 Countries Benefited, Sri Lanka Among the Top

COLOMBO (News 1st); The 64th National Day and the 34th Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait was celebrated in Colombo on 24th February.

Othman M.A.H.S. Alomar, Charge D’ Affairs of the Embassy of the State of Kuwait, highlighted the enduring success and humanitarian efforts of Kuwait, emphasizing its strong diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka.

"The foundation of Kuwait's success was established in 1962 with the drafting of its constitution, creating a social contract between the ruler and the people," Alomar stated. He underscored that this democratic political system has been pivotal in maintaining the country's stability, securing national safety, and fostering social harmony.

Regionally, Kuwait has been a steadfast supporter of neighboring Arab and Islamic nations. On the global stage, it is respected for its generosity, having aided 105 countries since the establishment of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development in 1961.

He said that in Sri Lanka, more than 14 projects have been launched since 1967 across various sectors, including agriculture, transport, energy, industry, and social development.

Kuwait and Sri Lanka have enjoyed a strong relationship for 54 years, covering areas such as politics, economics, trade, culture, and healthcare.

He said that both countries are committed to further strengthening these ties.

Diplomatic relations between Kuwait and Sri Lanka officially began on February 19, 1971.

The Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Sri Lanka was established in 1995, while the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait was founded in 1981.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Bureau reports that from 2014 to 2024, Kuwait became the top destination for Sri Lankan workers, with 77,847 individuals securing employment, contributing to a total of 165,103 Sri Lankans living in Kuwait. Alomar expressed hope for attracting more workers from Sri Lanka to meet the growing demand in various sectors.

Kuwait has been a strong supporter of efforts to address the challenges faced by the Palestinian people, highlighting the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative by King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

This initiative calls for recognizing Palestinian rights, a two-state solution, and an independent Palestine. Alomar encouraged friends in Sri Lanka to continue supporting this important initiative for lasting peace in the Middle East.
