COLOMBO (News 1st); The number of fatalities due to leptospirosis in the Jaffna district has risen to 8.
The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health stated that 39 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Leptospirosis cases have been reported from three health medical officer divisions in the Jaffna district: Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, and Karavetti.
Dr. Thushani Dabarera, a specialist in the epidemiology unit of the Ministry of Health, mentioned that 58 cases of Leptospirosis had been reported as of yesterday.
Among them, 28 patients are receiving treatment at Point Pedro Hospital, and 11 patients are being treated at the Jaffna Hospital.
The Ministry of Health also stated that two health teams conducted an investigation in the Northern Province last week regarding this Leptospirosis outbreak.
The ministry also noted that nearly 12,000 cases have been reported in the country this year.
In December alone, 85 Leptospirosis cases have been reported.
The Ministry of Health’s Epidemiology Unit further stated about 200 deaths from disease have been reported so far this year.
