COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has announced a week-long island-wide control program starting next Sunday.
The initiative aims to tackle the breeding grounds of the mosquito-borne disease at every single premise across the country.
This decisive action comes in response to a significant spike in dengue cases fueled by the ongoing rainy season.
Over 87,000 cases were reported in 2023 alone, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the NDCU, further underlined the urgency, stating that 676 cases were reported in just the final four days of the year.
The Dengue Prevention Week will prioritize thorough inspections in 70 high-risk dengue medical officer divisions across 15 districts.
