US Urges Sri Lanka to Address Torture and Land Grabs

COLOMBO (News 1st); At the 54th session of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Michéle Taylor delivered a statement on behalf of the United States, commending Sri Lanka's efforts in women's empowerment and economic recovery. 

"We welcome signs of economic recovery and encourage the government to integrate greater transparency into its focus on anti-corruption and long-term sustainable development," she said.

The U.S. delegate emphasized the importance of integrating greater transparency into anti-corruption measures and sustainable development initiatives.

The United States strongly urged the Sri Lankan government to continue returning land to its rightful owners, cease additional land grabs, and enhance transparency in land deals. Ambassador Michéle Taylor expressed deep concern over ongoing reports of torture, calling on the Sri Lankan government to address these issues and hold perpetrators accountable.

Highlighting the need for reconciliation, Ambassador Michéle Taylor pointed out that longstanding impunity for human rights abuses remains a significant obstacle. The US advocated for transitional justice institutions and reconciliation initiatives that are victim-centered, independent, inclusive, impartial, and transparent to restore trust in institutions and minimize the risk of renewed conflict.

Ambassador Michéle Taylor called for tangible steps from the Sri Lankan government to foster an environment conducive to meaningful reconciliation.
