Traffic along Southern Expressway hampered

Vehicular movement along Southern Expressway hampered due to landslide; Motorists instructed to use alternative routes

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Vehicular movement along the Southern Expressway has been hampered after a mound of earth collapsed on to the road.

Accordingly, vehicular movement along all four lanes of a section of the Southern Expressway between Pinnaduwa and Imaduwa has been hampered.

The Road Development Authority has instructed commuters to use alternative routes to avoid any inconvenience.

Vehicles travelling from Kottawa to Hambantota must exit from the Pinnaduwa Interchange, travel through the Galle-Deniyaya-Madampe Road and enter the Southern Expressway through the Imaduwa Interchange once again. 

Vehicles travelling from Hambantota to Kottawa must exit through Imaduwa Interchange, travel through the Galle-Deniyaya-Madampe Road and enter the Southern Expressway through the Pinnaduwa Interchange once again.

Seven officers of the Police and Special Task Force were injured following the incident.

Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa says one of the officers is currently receiving treatment at the ICU of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The officers were on duty at the location where the incident took place.

The Road Development Authority has instructed those residing in the vicinity to immediately evacuate the area.
