COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka made global headlines in 2021, after the discovery of what was called the world's largest star sapphire cluster.
The Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority at one time said it was worth around USD 200 Million, and downgraded it to USD 100 Million later.
However, at the Committee on Public Enterprises on Wednesday (24) it was revealed that it was only worth a mere USD 10,000.
The discovery of what was called the world's largest star sapphire cluster, was reported by News 1st on the 27th of July 2021.
Authorities said that it weighed around 510 kilograms, and it was said that it would be taken overseas to be auctioned.
During a session of the Committee on Public Enterprises in Parliament, the officials from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority admitted to the fact that so-called world's largest star sapphire cluster had only an antique value, and was only suitable to be placed in a museum.
