Landslide early warnings for Colombo and Ratnapura districts

COLOMBO (News 1st); Landslide warnings have been issued for several divisional secretariats in the Colombo and Ratnapura districts, due to the prevailing showery conditions.

Senior geologist of the National Building Research Organization Wasantha Senadheera said landslide warnings have been issued to the Padukka Divisional Secretariat in the Colombo District and the Ratnapura and Eheliyagoda Divisional Secretariats in the Ratnapura District.

Senadheera said the people in those areas are advised to remain vigilant under the Level 1 landslide warning, which will remain in effect till 8 PM on Thursday (27). 

He requested area residents to evacuate to safety if there is an increase in the rainy conditions.

The Department of Meteorology predicted showers or thundershowers over most parts of the island after 2 PM on Thursday (27).

The Department predicted fairly heavy showers above 75mm in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

The Met. Department also predicted showers in the Eastern province and in the coastal areas of the Southern province during the morning.
