One dead, eight injured in Matale accident

Colombo (News 1st) - One person died while eight others were injured following an accident involving an SUV near Thotagamuwa in Matale on Saturday (8).

The accident occured at around 2am near Thotagamuwa in Matale.

10 young people, who had been returning from a function in Palapathwala in Matale, were inside the jeep at the time of the incident. They were a group of students who had appeared for the 2022 Advanced Level Examination.

19 year old Dushmantha Sithum Wijesekera, a resident of Thotagamuwa in Matale, died in the tragic incident. He was the captain of the 2021/2022 St. Thomas College, Matale school cricket team.

Sithum Wijesekera was a promising cricketer and played for the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team.

Hospital sources said the driver and another youth were seriously injured and are being treated at the intensive care unit of the Matale General Hospital.
