COLOMBO (News 1st) - Farmers point out that the Sena caterpillar is now damaging maize crops in the Polonnaruwa district.
It is reported that more than 2,500 acres have been destroyed by Sena caterpillars in the Palugaswewa Regional Secretariat division alone.
Although it has been 3 to 4 months since the maize cultivation in the Palugaswewa area began, the growth of the crop has slowed down due to the Sena caterpillar invasion.
Farmers point out that the Sena caterpillar eats from the soil of the maize plant and destroys the plant itself.
Palugaswewa farmers cultivate maize only for one season every year.
