COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka is planning to attract over 5,000 Russian visitors a month, said Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, Prof. Janita A. Liyanage.

She said that the Sri Lankan Embassy has already launched a series of promotional campaigns to attract Russian tourists.

She said that the Sri Lanka mission in Moscow orgaznied several promotional campaigns in key Russian cities including St. Petersburg.

Russia’s leading carrier Aeroflot Airlines resumed operations between Colombo and Moscow on October 10th after suspending services to Sri Lanka for over four months.

Aeroflot suspended its flights to Sri Lanka on June 04 this year after Sri Lankan authorities detained its Airbus A330 jet arrived at BIA on June 02, following an enjoining order issued by the Colombo Commercial High Court preventing an Aeroflot flight from leaving Sri Lanka after hearing a complaint filed by Celestial Aviation Trading Limited in Ireland.

In July, the Colombo Commercial High Court dismissed the case filed by the Irish company against Russia’s Aeroflot Airline.

Aeroflot will operate two flights a week in October on Sundays and Thursdays, and four flights a week from November with Aeroflot’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
