COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Jayewardenepura University Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology Head Dr. Chandima Jeewandara raised concerns regarding a subvariant of Omicron; the BA.5 subvariant.
Pointing out that the world is currently experiencing one of the largest COVID waves of the pandemic, Dr. Jeewandara said that it is one of the most contagious and most immune-evasive coronavirus strains yet.
He also said that hospitalizations will likely keep going up in the current BA.5 wave, and advised the public to obtain their booster, to mask up at least indoors, and to test if anyone develops symptoms.
